After entering my registration number I get the following error message when I try to open my Tax Assistant for Excel file: "Excel cannot open the file because the file format or file extension is not valid. Verify that the file has not been corrupted and that the file extension matches the format of the file."This problem can sometimes occur when you have saved your Tax Assistant for Excel file in the new Excel 2007 .xlsm XML file format and then enter your registration number into the program. Although the latest release of the program corrects this problem, it can be corrected as follows if you discover you have this problem. When entering your registration number, the program automatically saves itself to save the registration number and remove the file password protection if necessary. The file would be saved in the older Excel 97-2003 format but keep the .xlsm extension. This makes Excel think the file is corrupted or has the wrong extension. To correct the problem, use Windows Explorer to navigate to the folder where your Tax Assistant for Excel file is located and change the file extension on the file from .xlsm to .xls. This will allow you to open the file and then you can save it in whichever format you prefer. You may need to change the Windows Explorer settings so you can view the file extensions. In Windows XP this can be done by selecting Tools - Folder Options in Windows Explorer and selecting the "View" tab. Then uncheck the "Hide extensions of known file types" checkbox and you will be able to view the extensions. In Windows Vista select Organize - Folder and Search Options in Windows Explorer and then follow the rest of the directions above for Windows XP. Back to TopThe Alternative Minimum Tax Calculation seems higher than it should be for my income. The following issues occured in 2008 version 4.2c and earlier: The “If you were under the age of 24 at the end of 2008” checkbox on Line 30 of Form 6251 was checked by default on early releases of the 2008 version of the program. This could make a significant difference in the AMT calculation, resulting in higher taxes if you did not catch the checkbox status when reviewing the data on the form. To correct the problem simply uncheck this checkbox if it does not apply to you. The number automatically entered from the Itemized Deductions Worksheet on Line 6 of Form 6251was entered as a positive number but should have been entered as a negative number. This issue was corrected with version 4.2c but it can be corrected manually by simply unprotecting Form 6251 and placing a negative sign in front of "IDWLine11" in the cell formula for Line 6 as follows: =IF(UsedSchA,(IF(OR(AGI>AGIMaxSingle,AND(SeparateBox,AGI>(AGIMaxSingle/2))),-IDWLine11,0)),0) Back to TopI have discovered a math error or miscalculation when using Tax Assistant. We thoroughly test our program to insure that all the calculations used in the program are correct and all applicable tax procedures are followed within the workings of the program. However, on rare occasions small errors have been corrected in the earlier releases of the program during the tax year. If you believe you have discovered a problem, check the Tax Assistant for Excel home page for the version number of the latest release and check it against the version you are using, which is shown at the top of the main Instructions worksheet. If a more recent release is available, scroll down the Tax Assistant home page for a complete description of the updates in the latest release. If the latest version corrects the problem simply download and install the new version. If it does not address the problem then please contact us via our support e-mail address at support@djicomputer.com and we'll look into your issue.
